Jim Wiethorn is an Engineering Specialist at International Crane & Construction Safety Solutions, LLC, Houston, Texas, and licensed as a professional engineer in 34 states. He has evaluated over 1200 crane and rigging failures throughout the United States and abroad and has compiled the largest data base of crane accidents in the world. Dr. Wiethorn serves on the ASME B30 main committee, as well as the B30.3, Tower Cranes, and B30.29, Self-Erecting Tower Cranes sub-committees. In 2014 Dr. Wiethorn published, Crane Accidents: A Study of Causes & Trends to Create a Safer Work Environment, 1983-2013, which detailed results of the study of over 500 crane accidents. In 2018, Dr. Wiethorn completed his Ph.D. with the publication of his dissertation, An Analysis of Critical Factors of Lift Planning to Improve Crane Safety Based on Forensic Causation of Crane Accidents, based on 701 crane accidents. Dr. Wiethorn holds four patents associated with crane safety operations. Dr. Wiethorn and Texas A&M University have aligned to form the Crane Safety Research Lab (CSRL) to house the largest crane accident data base in the world, as well as development and testing of safety related systems and devices for the crane industry.
