Barry Verdegan

For over 40 years, Barry Verdegan worked in the field of hydraulic and engine filtration. Beginning as a Research Chemist for Nelson Industries in 1978, he retired from Cummins Filtration as a Research Fellow in 2019, and now works as a consultant on filtration standards for 11171 Solutions LLC. Barry has a Ph.D. in Water Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin. During his career, he studied the design and application of filters for hydraulic, fuel, lube, and air products. He has 97 US patents on filters and related technology, and received awards for product development. Barry is active in developing industrial filter test standards through ISO TC 131/SC 6 on hydraulic contamination control and is its past Chair. Among the many projects he led is ISO 11171 Calibration method automatic particle counters for liquids, which establishes a common basis for the measurement of solid contaminant levels in hydraulic fluids, aviation and diesel fuels, engine oil and other petroleum-based fluids. He is also past Chair of the US Technical Advisory Group to ISO TC 131/SC 6, the National Fluid Power Association's Contamination Technology Committee, and the American Filtration & Separations Society.
